Kleine Schütz
Small-scale vocal masterpieces of Heinrich Schütz, composed during the deprivation years of the Thirty Years War
Amidst devastating warfare in mid-seventeenth century Germany, with performing forces severely depleted, Schütz's creativity knew no bounds, as he produced solos, duets, trios and quartets in a dazzling display of compositional virtuosity. On this program are selections from his Cantiones Sacrae (1625) and from the two books of Kleine geistliche Konzerte (1636 and 1639). Schola’s singers are joined by a continuo of Baroque guitar, theorbo, bass viol and chamber organ.
